Doris Evelyn Stewart Thomas, 85, of Indianapolis, passed on October 26, 2014. She is survived by her children, Tessa (Charles) Wells, Rita Taylor, and Tony (Vicki) Jackson; and a host of grand, great grand, and great-great grandchildren. A Homegoing Celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, with calling at 11 a.m., at The Church of the Living God and the Saints of Christ, 3025 W. 16th Street, Indianapolis, IN. Mrs. Doris Evelyn Stewart Thomas was born on December 17, 1928 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, to Ora E. Kay and Edgar M. Gray, who preceded her in death.
Doris attended school in Hopkinsville and Indianapolis, including Crispus Attucks High School. She enrolled in Poro Beauty School, where she graduated and became a licensed Beautician, working in Lockfield Gardens, Fort Harrison, and several shops in Broad Ripple and Greenwood. She was known as a great stylist and teacher of Cosmetology and also attended IUPUI majoring in psychology.
Doris professed a hope in Christ at the age of 10 years in Hopkinsville, Ky. She was a child gospel singer and later appeared as a soloist in many churches, and directed and helped with choirs at other churches in Indianapolis. She was a member of 25th Street Baptist Church but later joined the Church of the First Born Saints. She also considered herself an associate member of the Church of the Living God and the Saints of Christ, where her son-in-law and daughter are members, and where she enjoyed the ministry of Elder Claude Strayhorn, Jr.
Doris was married to Richard Stewart of Marion, Indiana; Frederick Webb of Roanoke, North Carolina; and Arthur Thomas of Chicago, Illinois. All preceded her in death.
Mrs. Doris Evelyn Stewart Thomas departed this life on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at the age of 85 years. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Lovingly referred to as ” Gra-Gra”, she was a stern but wise and loving Mother, Grandmother, and Friend. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters, Tessa Wells (Charles) and Rita Taylor; son, Oral ” Tony”” Anthony Jackson (Vicki); grandchildren, Dannye McIntosh, Jonathan Harrison, RiNita Beckett, Tana Sims (Delman), Nikia Godet(Vaughn), Natalie Stobbs; and many great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
